Biography and Statement

Joseph E. Schultz

In 1965, after serving four years in the U.S. Navy, I decided to make art my career.  A correspondence course, one year at the South Bend Art Center, and the following year at Ivy Tech’s first year school for commercial art, prepared me for work in a local advertising agency.  Things happened quickly after that.  I was free-lancing for one of this area’s largest art studios and was asked to teach part-time at Ivy Tech to help develop their Art/Photography Department.  Within that year, I developed enough clients to start Schultz Advertising Art, later incorporating into Schultz Art Studio, Inc. and served as Art Director for numerous firms.  From 1978-1980 I was employed as Art Director for the South Bend Toy Company, while still free-lancing nights and weekends.  In the 80s, I found my interest leaning towards illustration and fine art.  The talents of artists and illustrators such as Robert Heindel, Mark English, and most notably Bernie Fuchs inspired me.  After attending their workshops and seminars, my painting career was underway.  After thirty-five years, I have retired the commercial work, and I am enjoying my painting more than ever.  As a member of the Hoosier Salon and Northern Indiana Artists, I am experiencing success in sales and awards at shows.  My choice of medium is oil on canvas, since I appreciate the luminous and versatile quality of oils as I work in a style of oil washes and lifting out highlights.  Subjects with strong lighting are always attractive to me, while landscapes and people subjects are my favorite.

Currently I am past president of the Northern Indiana Artists Inc., South Bend’s oldest visual fine arts group and serving on the board for over twelve years.  Also, I am teaching oil painting and illustration at my studio.

In the past years I have taken first place in oil painting at the Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN; first place at The Center for Northern Indiana History in South Bend; and Best of Show, the Zimmerman Award at the South Bend Museum of Art.  My work has been accepted many times for the Hoosier Salon show in Indianapolis, IN, and I have sold paintings in their gallery.  During the summer of 2006,  I had a solo show in New Buffalo, MI featuring fifteen lighthouses on Michigan’s west shore.  Also, I had a solo show at Heartland Gallery in Plymouth, IN, 2011.  In 2003, I entered, for the first time, a painting in the National Park Academy of Arts Contest and was accepted as one of their entries.

Recently I have been working with pastel on cotton paper.  I have had success in sales and have won awards with the Judge’s Award at the South Bend Museum of Art Northern Indiana’s Pastel Society Show in 2009.   Also in 2009, I won  a merit award for pastel at a Northern Indiana Artist’s Winter Show.  My first pastel was auctioned off at an Indiana University of South Bend, Heritage Foundation Fundraiser.  The pastels were scenes of my recent trip to Italy.
